Just 24 hours after Election Day, anti-gun lawmakers in Arizona signaled plans to pursue gun control in 2027, leaving law-abiding Arizonans to face the harsh reality that a consequential legislative session lies ahead.
According to a November 4 report from the Arizona Mirror, Representative Nancy Gutierrez (D-LD18) identified "gun safety legislation" as a key priority. With anti-gun Governor Katie Hobbs securing a second term and Democrats poised to take control of both chambers of the Arizona Legislature for the first time in 60 years, it should come as no surprise that Arizonans' Second Amendment rights are under threat.
We have seen anti-gun proposals in Arizona before. During the 2026 legislative session, lawmakers introduced measures seeking to restrict certain semiautomatic firearms and magazines, impose additional background check requirements on private firearm transfers, mandate permits and training for concealed carry, and establish waiting periods for firearm purchasers.
Those measures failed to become law because of swift action by the previous pro-gun majority. However, with anti-gun lawmakers preparing to take control of the Legislature, similar measures could now have a clearer path to Governor Hobbs' desk in 2027.
As former NRA President Charlton Heston declared, "I simply cannot stand by and watch a right guaranteed by the Constitution of the United States come under attack." That same resolve guides the NRA today. We will vigorously oppose legislation that threatens the Second Amendment, challenge all efforts to restrict the rights of law-abiding Arizonans, and stand firm in defense of the constitutional freedoms we have fought to protect.
