Louisiana Legislative Alert

Tuesday, April 3, 2001

On Tuesday, April 3, the Senate Judiciary C committee reported out two bills that take direct aim at gun owners and your right to own a handgun in your home for personal protection.

SB 424 would force gun owners to lock up all handguns in their home or car or risk being held criminally liable if anyone under the age of 16 gained unauthorized access to those guns and they were not locked. There is no protection for gun owners if the handguns are acquired unlawfully, through theft or trespass on one`s personal property.

SB 425 would actually require all handguns possessed in the state to be outfitted with a locking device whether that gun is in your home, your car or even on your person if you are a concealed carry permit holder.

Please call and email your Senators and urge them to OPPOSE SB 424 and SB 425 when they come up for a vote on the Senate floor. Be sure to be courteous and polite when speaking with Senators and their staff and in any correspondence with them. Senators can be reached at the capitol tomorrow and in the district for the balance of the week:
