New Mexico - Mayor Baca`s Plan Dealt a Huge Setback

Tuesday, August 28, 2001

Last night, the Finance and Government Operations Committee Of the Albuquerque City Council unanimously rejected Ordinance 01-108, anti-gun Mayor Jim Baca’s proposal to opt-out from New Mexico’s new Right to Carry law and prohibit trained, law-abiding citizens from carrying within city limits. Please call, fax, and email all Committee members listed below and thank them for listening to the facts on this issue and for beating back this unconstitutional attempt to deny Albuquerque residents the right to protect themselves under State law.

You can reach all Committee members by phone at (505) 768-3100.
You can reach all Committee members by fax at (505) 768-3227.
Email addresses for the Committee members can be found at www.cabq.gov.

Finance and Government Operations Committee members include:

Committee Chairman: Tim Kline
Michael Brasher
Vincent Griego
Greg Payne
Brad Winter

The Committee also approved a Resolution sponsored by Greg Payne (R-01-276) which prohibits the city from enacting any ordinance, rule, or regulation on the issue of Right To Carry in accordance with the State Constitution. It also prohibits the City Attorney’s office from intervening in any legal action on this matter. A majority of the City Council could still vote to bring Mayor Baca’s ordinance up for consideration before the full Council in spite of the Committee’s vote. Therefore, it is critical that you not only call and thank those Committee members for their support, but that you also contact the remaining members of the Council and urge them to oppose Ordinance 01-108. Those members are listed below:

Alan Armijo
Hess Yntema
Adele Hundley
Mike McEntee

Thank you for your support!
