Major Anti-Gun Bill Still Pending With Less Than Two Days To Go

Legislators in Sacramento will be working furiously to beat Friday`s deadline to pass a number of anti-gun bills still pending before both houses. SB 52 (Scott) and AB 35 (Shelley), passed out of the Assembly and Senate respectively, and are headed back to their houses of origin for a final vote before being moved on to Governor Davis should they be given a majority vote. Although these bills have been significantly amended to remove the shooting proficiency provision, they are still a threat to law-abiding citizens who wish to purchase a handgun. So far, in addition to the NRA, the California State Sheriffs Association and other influential organizations have remained firm in their opposition to both bills, and it is our hope that this will move the Governor to veto the bills..

The following is a list of the bills we are tracking, including a short summary, NRA`s position, and their current location:

BillSummaryNRA PositionStatus
AB 22 (Lowenthal) Grants the state jurisdiction over local planning authorities as to where home-based FFL dealers can be located. In essence banning home dealers. OPPOSEOn Senate Floor
AB 35 (Shelley) Assembly`s version of handgun safety certificate scheme. OPPOSEOn Assembly Floor
SB 52 (Scott) Senate`s version of handgun safety certificate scheme. OPPOSEOn Senate Floor

SB 626 (Perata)Bill amended per NRA request.

It is vital that you contact your Assembly member and Senator as soon as possible to register your opposition to these bills. A great number of things can happen this last week as legislators are consumed with last minute deals- don`t let your Second Amendment rights be bargained away at the eleventh hour! Please call NOW!
