Illinois Gun Owners Fight Back

Monday, March 17, 2003

Your calls have already dealt a serious blow to Mayor Daley’s original agenda, but the fight is far from over!

Daley is pushing a bill which claims that everything from a gun club meeting to a shooting tournament is a "Gun Show." HB 2356 would prohibit ALL private transactions at such events, unless they go through a federally licensed firearm dealer who could charge whatever fees he chooses for the service! Further-more, in a game of back room politics, the House Speaker reconvened the House Judiciary Committee, substituting two anti-gun representatives for legislators who had voted to defeat House Bill 2532 the previous day! With the anti-gunners, HB 2532 passed committee.  Outrageous, I’m sure you would agree!  HB 2532 is a dealer licensing bill requiring all FFL’s to get a state license at a cost of $300 every 5 years with every sale reported to the state police. Obviously, this is a Daley "bait-and-switch" to actually create a statewide registration database, so that ANY law enforcement agency can go into ANY FFL`s store and search their records at ANY time with no warrant! Even Sarah Brady is lobbying your lawmakers in support of these bills.

Not only are there some significant gun control bills still alive in the State House, but Daley and his crowd have managed to push a "GUN BAN" through the State Senate Judiciary Committee.   Senate Bill 1195, is a serious "Gun Ban" that makes it a felony to possess a number of semi-automatic firearms by name and/or by features. Many of these firearms are commonly used for hunting or competitive shooting.  SB 1195 bans guns that have any one of a list of features including:  any gun of caliber .50 or larger ; have a folding or telescoping stock, and the list goes on. In other words your -- M1 Carbines owned by WW II veterans: BANNED, Colt AR-15s:  BANNED, your Ruger 10/22: BANNED!

You must act now to help stop them!

It is critical that you contact your state legislators and urge them to "OPPOSE" HB 2356, HB 2532, and SB 1195. You can find contact information by using our "Write Your Representatives" tool.
