Albemarle County Board of Supervisors in Virginia to Discuss Changing County Firearm Ordinances!

Monday, October 30, 2006

The Albemarle County Board of Supervisors is scheduled to meet on Wednesday, November 1, at 9:00 a.m. to discuss proposed changes to the county’s firearms ordinances.

Among the changes likely to be discussed is a countywide prohibition on the discharge of firearms within 200 yards of a dwelling, a business establishment, a public building, a public gathering, or a public meeting place. Such an arbitrary ban on lawful firearms discharge could directly affect the county’s sport shooting ranges.

These proposed measures seem are a solution in search of a problem.  There is no evidence that the lawful discharge of firearms is a public safety concern in Albemarle County.

Rather, there are ample laws already in place that allow for the punishment of those who endanger the safety of others.  The Board of Supervisors should be encouraged to use those tools first, before entertaining a one-size-fits-all approach to restricting the lawful discharge of firearms.

If you live in Albemarle County, are a member of gun club located in Albemarle, or shoot competitively in Albemarle, please contact the Board of Supervisors and let them know that you do not support the proposed changes to the current firearms discharge ordinance.

While public comment time is not scheduled for Wednesday’s Board meeting, if possible, please plan on attending the discussion to show your support for Albemarle County’s sport shooting ranges. The meeting will be held in the 2nd Floor Lane Auditorium, located in the County Office Building.

Regardless of whether or not you plan on attending the meeting, please be sure to contact the Board of Supervisors and let them know that you do not support the proposed firearms discharge ordinance changes.
