Minnesota “Castle Doctrine” Legislation Needs Your Help!

Friday, April 6, 2007

The Chairman of the House Public Safety Committee, Representative Joe Mullery (D-58A), has been holding House File 498 hostage in his committee.  HF 498, “Castle Doctrine” legislation would allow a person to use deadly force against a violent attacker in and outside of his or her home and vehicle and removes the duty to retreat when outside of the home.  The bill also provides that a person who uses reasonable force against an attacker shall be immune from civil and criminal liability for injuries or death of the attacker.

HF 498 bill sponsor, Representative Tony Cornish (R-24B), has decided to take action by pulling his “Castle Doctrine” bill from the House Public Safety Committee and will make a procedural motion to have the bill directly debated and voted on by the House of Representatives.

Please contact your State Representative at (651) 296-2146 and respectfully ask him or her to support Representative Cornish’s motion to give HF 498 a fair hearing on the floor of the House of Representatives and to support passage of this critical self-defense legislation.
