Rhode Island Microstamping Bill to be Considered Tuesday, June 10!

House Bill 7834, the "microstamping" proposal sponsored by State Representatives Joseph Almeida (D-12), Edith Ajello (D-3), Anastasia Williams (D-9), Grace Diaz (D-11), and Joanne Giannini (D-7) will be heard in the House Finance Committee early next week.  The bill was pulled from the agenda of the House Judiciary Committee several weeks ago after proponents sensed a lack of support in the House Judiciary Committee, typically the panel with expertise on firearms-related legislation.  The bill's sponsors had it referred to another committee.

HB7834 would ban the sale of semi-automatic handguns not equipped with so-called "microstamping" technology.  Microstamping is an unproven technology that would require identifying marks to be etched into the firing pin and breech face of a firearm in such a manner that these marks are transferred to the cartridge case upon firing.  The technology can easily be defeated with common household tools, has no public safety value, and will add substantially to the cost of the firearm.

HB7834 will be heard on Tuesday, June 10 in the Trainor Hearing Room, Room 35 of the State House.  It will be considered at the Rise of the House, whenever business for the day ends, usually between 4:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m.

We urge members to attend the hearing, which will be televised.  This will be a great opportunity for NRA members to show their opposition to HB7834.  If you are unable to attend the hearing, you can still help by contacting the members of the House Finance Committee IMMEDIATELY and respectfully urging them to oppose HB7834!  Contact information can be found below.
