Arizona: Volunteers Needed to Clean Public Lands in Table Mesa Recreation Area on Saturday, November 8!

Tuesday, November 4, 2008

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is hosting a cleanup event off of Table Mesa Road, north of Phoenix.  This area receives a tremendous amount of recreation, including target shooting.  This alert is being sent to encourage NRA members who recreate in the Table Mesa area, or live in that part of the state, to volunteer for this event.

It is being held in collaboration with the Arizona Game and Fish Department and the Arizona Off-Highway Vehicle Ambassadors, with support by the Arizona Virtual Jeep Club, Arizona Off Highway Vehicle Coalition, Arizona ATV Riders, Arizona Rock Rats, Absolute Offroad, and other volunteers.   NRA knows that its members understand the importance of keeping public lands open to the public by helping to clean up what the careless and thoughtless leave behind.

Directions:  From the Phoenix area, travel north on Interstate 17, exiting at Table Mesa Road (exit 236).  On-site registration and cleanup begins at 8:00 a.m.  The BLM says that:

  • Lunch will be provided.
  • Wear long-sleeve shirts and pants; shoes should have closed-toes.
  • Bring plenty of water, gloves, sunscreen, and a hat.
  • Safety training and trash bags will be supplied. Participants are encouraged to bring their own rakes, flat-head shovels, and grab handles. Five-gallon buckets with handles are also handy for collecting small debris and broken glass.

BLM requests that those who wish to volunteer contact Chris Gammage at (623) 580-5512 or Mary Skordinsky at (623) 580-5500 to let them know you are coming.

The NRA is hoping that recreational shooters will have a strong volunteer presence.  If you can participate in the event, we would appreciate that you wear your NRA hat, t-shirt, or other article of NRA clothing to proudly identify yourselves as NRA members.
