Major Pro-Gun Bills to be Heard in Oregon Judiciary Committees

Monday, April 11, 2011

Three pro-gun measures will be working their way through the legislature in Salem during the coming days and your support will be the key to their progress.

Introduced by state Representative Kim Thatcher (R-25), House Bill 2791 would remove the Department of State Police as the designated state point of contact for the purposes of the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS).  HB 2791 is scheduled to be heard in the House Judiciary Committee on Tuesday, April 19 at 1:00 p.m. in Room 343.  We want to pack the hearing room with supporters to send a message that Oregon gun owners are tired of paying for background investigations through the state that could be free of charge under the NICS federal program.

Please contact members of the House Judiciary Committee and respectfully urge them to support HB 2791.  Contact information for this committee can be found at the bottom of this alert.

Senate Bill 582 and Senate Bill 934 are scheduled to be heard in the Senate Judiciary Committee on April 14.  SB 582, sponsored by state Senator Doug Whitsett (R-28), would prohibit a public body from releasing information that identifies holders of or applicants for a concealed handgun license, with the exception of disclosure for criminal justice purposes or pursuant to court order.  SB 934, introduced by state Senator Larry George (R-13), would also remove the Department of State Police as the designated state point of contact for purposes of NICS.  Both of these pro-gun measures will be heard at 8:00 a.m. in Room 343 on April 14.  While we do not know if these will be substantive or procedural hearings, they deserve attention since these bills are being heard in this committee.

Please contact members of the Senate Judiciary Committee and respectfully urge them to support SB 582 and SB 934. Contact information for this committee can be found below.

Due to an error in yesterday’s alert, we would like to emphasize that the NRA is NOT supporting Senate Bill 762 as previously indicated.  The NRA has worked diligently during past sessions to pass legislation that requires all felons to petition a Circuit Court in order to have their rights restored, a system that has been implemented successfully in Oregon.
