Police arrived at the U.S. Money Shop in Chattanooga, Tenn. to find an armed criminal attempting to rob the store. After realizing police had arrived, the criminal fired through the store’s front door at the officers and fled through a side door. The police gave pursuit, with Officer Tim Chapin striking the criminal with his police vehicle. The impact from the vehicle caused the robber to drop the handgun he was holding, but the chase continued on foot with Chapin in pursuit. Chapin attempted to subdue the criminal using a taser, but the robber was unaffected and responded by drawing a second gun from his jacket and firing it at Chapin. A gun battle ensued, with Chapin returning fire, before being struck fatally. Watching the crime unfold from his front lawn was Harlan Murphy, who had been tending to a garage sale with his family. Murphy ushered his family inside, retrieved a .22-revolver and returned to the scene, aimed the gun at the criminal and ordered him to the ground. The criminal complied and Murphy held him at gunpoint until additional police units arrived.
