Two Important Pro-Gun Bills Headed to the Oregon House Floor

Senate Bill 347 B-Engrossed is expected to be heard on the state House floor tomorrow, June 8.  Introduced by state Senator Diane Rosenbaum (D-21), SB 347 was amended in the state House to include a provision that would prohibit a public body from releasing information that identifies either an applicant for, or a holder of, a concealed handgun license (CHL).  A key factor of this bill is that it would also exempt the disclosure of records pertaining to a domestic violence service or a resource center that assists those affected by domestic or sexual violence who visit the center for referrals, resource information, or any related services.

This is an extremely valuable legislative fix in that a woman or any individual who is granted protections under this legislation would, upon applying for a CHL, have any or all of their personal information immediately become public record, which could create an increased environment for victimization.

Please contact your state Representative and respectfully urge him or her to support SB 347.  For help identifying your state Representative and for his or her contact information, please click here.

Also being considered tomorrow in the state House is Senate Bill 924 B Engrossed, which would set penalties for the illegal taking of specific species, including but not limited to wildlife.  Poaching has been on the rise in Oregon and SB 924 would address this growing problem it creates for all outdoorsmen.

Sponsored by state Senator Brian Boquist (R-12), SB 924 would create the imposition of a maximum fine allowed under law if a person is convicted more than three times of a Class A misdemeanor involving the illegal taking of wildlife.  It would require the imposition of a fine (the greater amount of $6,250 or the maximum allowed by law) if an individual takes three times the daily bag limit of any wildlife species, as well as would require the revocation of all recreational tags, licenses and permits for the illegal taking or sale of a threatened or endangered species for a period of time as dictated by the courts.

On June 3, SB 924 was amended in the state House to include sunset modifications in January of 2015 pending a report from the Department of Fish and Wildlife related to the above modifications, which must be submitted to the Legislative Assembly no later than January of 2014.

Please contact your state Representative to encourage his or her support for this important conservation measure.  For help identifying your state Representative and for his or her contact information, please click here.
