Anti-Gun Bills Still Alive in California

Friday, June 24, 2011

Contact members of the state Senate and Assembly Appropriations Committee

Despite passing one pro-gun bill and defeating one anti-gun bill, the state Senate and Assembly Public Safety Committee still voted to attack our Second Amendment rights by supporting several anti-gun bills.  Those anti-gun bills now go to the state Senate and Assembly Appropriations Committees.  Your calls and e-mails opposing these anti-gun bills are even more important.

Please forward this alert to your family, friends and fellow gun owners across California and urge them to also call their state legislators to OPPOSE SB 427, SB 819, AB 809 and SUPPORT SB 610.

California needs ALL gun owners and sportsmen to voice their opposition to these anti-gun bills.

A hearing date has not been set for the following bills, but we do know that they will be heard in the Assembly Appropriations Committee soon.  Please call AND e-mail members of the Assembly Appropriations Committee urging them to OPPOSE SB 427 and SB 819 and SUPPORT SB 610. Contact information for the Assembly Appropriations Committee can be found here.

Oppose these bills:

Senate Bill 427 is an ammunition sales registration extension bill.  This bill is an attempt to overturn the NRA court victory earlier this year which ruled that the handgun ammunition sales registration law (AB 962 in 2010) unconstitutional and stopped this law from being enforced.  Anti-gun activists are determined to take away gun ownership piece by piece and this bill targets ammunition.

Senate Bill 819 is a bill that would further raid the background check fund (DROS). These funds have been continually raided to help the Department of Justice pay its bills.  As a result, the DROS fund will certainly run out of money.  When it does, what will be their answer to this problem – another increase in the fees for background checks.

Support this bill:

Senate Bill 610 is a concealed weapons reform bill.    SB 610 is a much-needed reform for California’s concealed carry permit application process.

Oppose this bill:

Assembly Bill 809 is a long gun sales registration bill.  The Canadian government discovered by trial and error what gun owners already knew: gun registration is of no real value to law enforcement; is next to impossible to implement; and is way too expensive.  Canada has spent billions trying to implement and enforce their gun registry – far more than proponents claimed it would cost.  Since California has three million more people than Canada, logic tells you that a long gun registry will cost California taxpayers far more than the estimates – certainly more than hundreds of thousands, and perhaps, as the Canadians found out the hard way, billions.

On a positive note, Senate Bill 798 failed to pass the Assembly Public Safety Committee.  Unfortunately, this bill is not completely dead as the bill sponsor was granted reconsideration, which could bring this bill back at anytime.

Senate Bill 798 is the air gun, airsoft and BB gun gun sales ban bill.  SB 798 would treat air guns and BB guns the same as a toy gun and require further color coding for airsoft guns. Air gun and BB guns are not toys and should not be treated as or manufactured like a toy and airsoft guns are already federally regulated.  Ultimately, SB 798 will ban the sale of all air guns, BB guns and airsoft guns unless the manufacturer is willing to take on the extra expense of complying with this proposed new law.
