Georgia: Pro-Gun Provisions Removed in House Committee

Wednesday, March 20, 2013

Yesterday, Senate Bill 101 passed by voice vote in the state House Public Safety and Homeland Security Committee but only after the removal of some important pro-gun provisions included in SB 101, as passed in the state Senate.

SB 101, sponsored by state Senator Frank Ginn (R-47), passed in the state Senate by an overwhelming 41-10 vote in its previous form on March 4.

House Public Safety and Homeland Security Committee Chairman Alan Powell (R-32) and members of this committee stripped out the following pro-gun provisions originally in SB 101 that would:

  • Enhance the current reciprocity for out-of-state concealed carry permit holders traveling through the great state of Georgia and setting legal precedent for other states to follow suit.
  • Remove the costly and unnecessary duplicative state required license for a firearms dealer, ensuring that firearms dealers are only required to have a Federal Firearms License (FFL).
  • Preempt the ban on firearms in public housing, as the necessity of self-defense is paramount regardless of where you call home.

Using the contact information provided below, please call AND e-mail Chairman Alan Powell and members of this House committee TODAY.  Tell them that you oppose the action they took yesterday removing important pro-gun provisions in SB 101!

Also, contact your own state Representative and urge him or her to help restore the pro-gun provisions in SB 101 removed by the House Public Safety and Homeland Security Committee.  Contact information for your state Representative can be found here.
