After a brief hiatus in Trenton, the gun grabbers are back at it this week. On Thursday, October 16, the Senate Law & Public Safety Committee will meet to consider S.1800. This bill requires gun dealers to post notification to buyers about straw purchases and inform transferees that they have a duty to report lost or stolen firearms within 36 hours. This bill impacts dealers as New Jersey already has a lost or stolen provision in state law. Dealers would be required to keep these signed records for 15 years. An initial violation results in a civil penalty and fine with escalating punishments for subsequent offenses.
These new proposed mandates are nothing more than bureaucratic red tape designed to harass gun dealers. Major components of New Jersey's gun control scheme have already been dealt serious blows by the courts. This feeble response is a textbook example of political pandering and doing something simply for the sake of doing something. It will do nothing to improve public safety. Trenton politicians would be much better served addressing real problems in the Garden State.
