Polls Show Electorate’s Interest in Gun Control Waning

In late July, the White House announced that through the first half of 2026, homicides were “on pace for the lowest level in at least 126 years.” In mid-August, the FBI released data showing that from 2024 to 2025 violent crime dropped 9.3%. That month, speaking to a crowd at the Nassau County Police Academy in New York, President Donald Trump stated, “We ended the war on police, and we declared a very strong war on crime.”

Gun owners will note that the historically low homicide rate has come during the golden age of the Second Amendment.

Following the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in the NRA-supported case New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen (2022), more Americans than ever can exercise their Right-to-Carry outside the home for self-defense –many doing so without government permission in the 29 Constitutional Carry states. Thanks to President Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill and a reasonable federal judiciary, parts of the National Firearms Act of 1934 have been effectively dismantled.

In 2023, NBC reported on their own poll that found, “Gun ownership reaches record high with American electorate”. The poll found that 52% of voters lived in gun-owning households. A 2026 survey showed that Americans own roughly half a billion guns, more than half a billion magazines with a capacity greater than 10 rounds, and tens of millions of semi-automatic rifles like the AR-15. The research found that “one out of every ten adults in the U.S. owns an AR-15 or similarly styled rifle.”

Perhaps this juxtaposition of decreasing crime and increasing firearms freedom, which exists athwart an endless stream of anti-gun propaganda, is why recent polling has shown a waning interest in gun control among the American public.

Each month Gallup asks Americans “What do you think is the most important problem facing this country today?” For the last seven months “Guns/Gun control” has registered between 0.0-0.5%.

This election season, Pew Research Center asked voters what issues are important to their vote for Congress. In this poll, voters could choose multiple answers and the results were broken down by party preference. Compared with the same poll conducted in 2022, the number of Democrat voters who listed “gun policy” as very important dropped 22%. Notably, the significance of gun policy to Republican voting intentions is almost unchanged.

This waning interest in gun control among the electorate is encouraging news, but gun owners shouldn’t lose their edge. As evidenced by the efforts of gun control financiers like billionaire Michael Bloomberg, much of gun control advocacy is a top-down campaign against freedom. Gun rights supporters shouldn’t equate a welcome disinterest in gun control from the electorate with a disinterest among the elite who fund gun control politics.
