NRA Submits Official Comments on BATFE’s Ammunition-Banning “Framework”--You Still Have Time to Make Your Own Voice Heard!

Although BATFE announced earlier this week that it would conduct “further study” before moving forward with its proposed “armor piercing” ammunition “Framework” and accompanying ban on M855/SS109 ammunition, the agency will still be accepting comments on the proposal until Monday, March 16th

BATFE made clear that the overwhelming number of critical comments already received –more than 80,000 as of March 10th– was a major factor in the agency’s decision to delay implementation of the Framework. If you have not yet commented, we ask you to provide clear and respectful comments before the comment period ends March 16th.  For more information on providing your own comments, please see our earlier alert with instructional details.

NRA’s official comments to BATFE can be viewed here.  Our submission focused on BATFE’s failure to follow proper federal procedure in proposing the Framework, the Framework’s gross deviations from the statute that it is proposed to implement, BATFE’s flawed interpretation of Supreme Court case law that it used to try to justify the Framework, and the lack of evidence for BATFE’s supposed “officer safety” rationale.

As we have noted in earlier alerts, your NRA has been hard at work for years to ensure BATFE does not abuse it’s authority under the 1986 “armor piercing” ammunition law. Should they come back with another overreaching proposal, we will continue to fight for your rights. As NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre noted, “They've gone away for now. We know they're coming back, and we will be ready."
