NRA Mobilizes Members to Bring AL Gun Laws in Line with Neighboring States

Thursday, April 7, 2016

Fairfax, Va. – The National Rifle Association’s Institute for Legislative Action (NRA-ILA) is asking its members and supporters in Alabama to contact their state representative and urge them to support a bill that would recognize a law-abiding gun owner’s right to have a concealed handgun in their vehicle without first obtaining a government-issued permit.

On April 5, the Alabama Senate approved and passed Senate Bill 14 with a 27-7 vote. A majority of states already allow law-abiding gun owners to carry a loaded handgun in their vehicle for self-defense without government-mandated permitting and taxation.

“If an individual can lawfully own and possess a firearm, they should not have restrictions placed on their ability to exercise their fundamental right to self-defense outside of their home and in their vehicle,” said Catherine Mortensen, NRA Spokesperson. “On behalf of the NRA’s members across the state of Alabama, I want to thank Senator Gerald Allen for sponsoring this pro-freedom bill. Senator Allen is a true friend of the Second Amendment,” concluded Mortensen.

Facts about Senate Bill 14:

  • Senate Bill recognizes that self-defense situations are difficult, if not impossible, to anticipate.
  • A law-abiding individual’s ability to exercise their fundamental right to self-defense within their home or in their vehicle should not be conditioned by government-imposed time delays and taxes.
  • Every surrounding state and a majority of states recognize this principle.
  • It is time for Alabama to join a majority of the states and adopt the provision of Senate Bill 14.
  • Senate Bill 14 will NOT allow prohibited persons to possess a concealed firearm in a vehicle.

Established in 1871, the National Rifle Association is America's oldest civil rights and sportsmen's group. More than five million members strong, NRA continues to uphold the Second Amendment and advocates enforcement of existing laws against violent offenders to reduce crime. The Association remains the nation's leader in firearm education and training for law-abiding gun owners, law enforcement and the armed services.
