New Jersey: Committees to Consider Anti-Gun Bills Next Week

Friday, June 17, 2016

On Monday, June 20, at 10:00 a.m., the Assembly Judiciary Committee is scheduled to hear Assembly Bill 1426/Senate Bill 816.  Sponsored by Assemblyman Gordon Johnson and state Senator Loretta Weinberg, A.1426/S.816 repeals the 2002 smart gun law; however, it forces all gun dealers in the state to provide this unproven technology for sale.  Please contact members of the Assembly Judiciary Committee and urge them to oppose A.1426/S.816!

Similar to last year’s “smart gun” legislation that was "pocket vetoed" by Governor Chris Christie, this measure is a backdoor attempt to force market acceptance of a product that has proven unreliable despite decades of research and development.  Presumably, the old smart gun law could then simply be reinstated, and within three years, traditional handgun sales would be forbidden by law.

At the same time on Monday, the Senate Law & Public Safety Committee is scheduled to hear Senate Bill 2165, Senate companion to Assembly Bill 3689.  S.2165, sponsored by Senator Weinberg, would require an applicant for a carry permit to submit a written certification of justifiable need to carry a handgun.  The justification will be under oath and must specify in detail the “urgent necessity for self-protection, as evidence by specific threats or previous attacks.”  A person should not have to "prove" a justifiable need to exercise a constitutional right.  This legislation outrageously requires a person to be under attack before meeting the criteria prescribed in the bill.  S.2165 is another example that anti-gun lawmakers completely oppose concealed carry and self-defense in New Jersey.

Again, please click the “Take Action” button above to contact members of the Assembly Judiciary Committee and respectfully urge them to oppose A.1426/S.816, as well as contact members of the Senate Law & Public Safety Committee and urge them to oppose S.2165!
