2017 California Legislative Session Reconvenes Today, January 4th

Today, January 4th, the California Senate and Assembly reconvened in Sacramento for the 2017 legislative session. Coming off the heels of a grueling 2016 session, where anti-gun legislators directly assaulted your Second Amendment rights, it is imperative that gun owners and Second Amendment supporters stay vigilant for the coming session. Your NRA will keep you updated on legislation as it is introduced and moves through the legislative process, representing you every step of the way.

Earlier this week, Governor Brown formally nominated NRA-PVF "F-rated" U.S. Representative Xavier Becerra, as California’s next Attorney General, whom we expect to be confirmed by the state Legislature.  The Legislature will have 90 days to confirm Becerra, with confirmation hearings expected to start on January 10th.

The California Legislature has been very public about their dissatisfaction with the election of Donald Trump as the 45th President of the United States and will be looking for any way possible to push back.  It was reported today that Democratic leadership in California have hired former United States Attorney General Eric Holder and his firm to represent California against any disputes it has with a Republican controlled White House and Congress.

Last week, we reported that the California Department of Justice (DOJ) submitted regulations for the new “assault weapons” laws to the Office of Administrative Law (OAL).  Click here to view the proposed regulations.  At this time, we are continuing to review these regulations and will be providing more detailed information in the coming days.
