M14s Added to CMP Roster

Since 1903, the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) has served a critical role in promoting America’s continued excellence in marksmanship and firearms safety by providing firearms education, training, and competitions nationwide. It is also the official channel for the sale of surplus military firearms.  Recently, the CMP announced that surplus military M14 rifles will soon be available for sale for the first time.

The M14 was formally adopted by our armed forces in 1957, and while it was no longer the standard-issue rifle by 1970—having been replaced by the M16—modified variants continued to see regular use until the late 1980s, often as sniper rifles.  Today, the rifle still sees some limited use in U.S. military branches, especially ceremonially.

Details about when the rifles will be available, as well as the order submission process, pricing, and sales channels have yet to be determined.  All rifles sold will first need to be permanently modified so that they only fire semi-automatically.

Other arms sold through the CMP include the M1 Garand, M1903 Springfield, M1911A1 pistols, .22 target rifles, as well as other small quantities of surplus rifles.  Surplus ammunition is also available, and the CMP has branched out into selling custom and commercial M1 Garands, as well as clothing and shooting accessories.

There has also been talk at times of adding surplus shotguns to the arms made available through the CMP.

We will report on updates to the new M14 program as they become available. For now, it is being reported, “The CMP anticipates first order fulfilment in the late 2026 to early 2027 timeframe.” In the meantime, be sure to visit the CMP website for the most timely and current information.
