An armed robber's gun jammed as he pointed it at a store clerk on the South Side on Wednesday evening, allowing the clerk and another worker to wrestle the gun away and hold the suspect for police, authorities said. "He was seconds away from a different outcome," Jerome Brown, a friend of the clerk, told reporters outside the store in the 8400 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue in Chatham. The gunman entered the store around 3:50 p.m. and pulled out a gun, according to police. "The guy didn't come in there to rob him, he came in to kill him and then rob him," Brown said. "He pointed the gun and pulled the trigger and it jammed. The clerk snatched the gun from him." There was a struggle and the 37-year-old clerk and another worker were able to hold the suspect until officers arrived, police said. The clerk suffered cuts and bruises and was taken in fair condition to Advocate Trinity Hospital, police said. Charges were pending against the 20-year-old suspect.
