Oregon: Anti-Gun Push Already Underway as Legislature Convenes Next Week

The 2018 Oregon Legislative Session is set to convene on Monday, February 5th, and the House Judiciary Committee has already scheduled a public hearing on anti-gun legislation.  House Bill 4145, which would significantly expand the class of persons who could be stripped of their Second Amendment rights, is scheduled for a public hearing on Wednesday, February 7th at 1:00PM in Hearing Room 50.  The legislature is wasting no time attacking your constitutional right to keep and bear arms.  Please contact members of the House Judiciary Committee and urge their strong opposition to House Bill 4145!  Click the “Take Action” button below to contact Judiciary Committee Members.

House Bill 4145 would expand the class of persons in Oregon that could be prohibited from possessing firearms.  This legislation would add stalking to the list of offenses that would result in the removal of Second Amendment rights, and would change existing law so that a broader definition of “family and household members” would be applied to firearm prohibitions for certain misdemeanor offenses and protective orders.  In doing so, this expansion would go well beyond existing state and federal law.  This legislation was filed at the request of Bloomberg supported Governor Kate Brown, who accepted a quarter of a million dollars from former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg during her election in 2016.  It is no surprise that she is again pushing new gun restrictions for 2018 as she heads into her re-election campaign.

Also pre-filed is Senate Joint Memorial 201, sponsored by Senator Peter Courtney (D-11). This resolution would urge the United States Congress to regulate semiautomatic weapons and trigger modification devices in the same manner as fully automatic firearms. This tired and consistently disproven logic that a semi-automatic firearms ban would reduce crime rates only undermines the ability of law abiding citizens to defend themselves legally.

Your NRA will actively oppose any infringement on Second Amendment rights in Oregon and will continue to keep you updated throughout the session.  Please stay tuned to email alerts and check www.NRAILA.org for ways to be involved in efforts to preserve our freedoms in Oregon.
