NRA-backed self-defense bill becomes law in Idaho

Fairfax, Va. - Gov. Otter of Idaho allowed Senate Bill (SB) 1313 to become law today without his signature. Passing through the State Legislature with backing from law enforcement and prosecutors, this vital piece of legislation significantly improves every law-abiding citizen’s ability to defend themselves in the great state of Idaho.

"Until we can predict where and when a violent crime will occur we must rely upon our fundamental, individual rights as Americans to defend ourselves and our loved ones," said NRA State Liaison Keely Hopkins. "This law recognizes that right and places the burden of proof upon the criminal instead of the victim."

SB 1313 clarifies a law-abiding citizen’s right to stand their ground when protecting themselves or their families. It also establishes a legal presumption that breaking into a home is sufficient cause for self-defense.

"The five million men and women of the NRA thank state Sen. Todd Lakey (R-12) and the Idaho Legislature for strengthening every law-abiding gun owner’s right to self-protection," concluded Hopkins.

The bill will officially go into effect on July 1, 2018.
