This week, two new gun control proposals were filed in the California Legislature. These bills, Assembly Bill 276, sponsored by Laura Friedman (D-43) and Senate Bill 172, sponsored by Anthony Portantino (D-25) would modify California’s already existing storage laws, which include a patchwork of local restrictions in addition to requiring firearms be inaccessible to both minors and prohibited persons, by providing additional storage requirements and significantly enhanced criminal penalties for failure to comply.
While NRA supports the safe and responsible use of firearms and has been the leader in educating the public to do so, we know that one size fits all storage mandates doesn't fit all gun owner’s situations. Moreover, this legislation has the potential to turn victims of property crime into criminals and prohibited persons. At this time, both AB 276 and SB 172 are pending committee assignments.
