New Mexico Action Needed: Senate Could Consider “Red Flag” Firearms Surrender Bill as Early as Friday

The New Mexico Senate Judiciary Committee narrowly approved a committee substitute for “red flag” legislation by a 6-5 vote.  This gun confiscation legislation has been prioritized by anti-gun Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham and was re-written on the fly by the bill sponsor and supporters.  Anti-gun lawmakers limited testimony during the hearing to help fast-track this bill through the legislature on what's supposed to be a 30-day budget session.  Don’t let them silence your opposition to this bill!  Contact your State Senator and urge them to OPPOSE Senate Bill 5!

The substitute for Senate Bill 5 requires individuals to surrender firearms to law enforcement if they are alleged to be dangerous or experiencing a mental health crisis -- but the measure still provides NO initial hearing for these individuals before a judge and NO access to mental health services or treatment before they lose their constitutional right to own a firearm.  Further, individuals subject to these orders will be included in the NICS database as prohibited persons until the order expires.

Senate Bill 5 could be voted on by the full Senate as early as tomorrow.  Contact your State Senator and urge them to OPPOSE Senate Bill 5, which tramples on civil liberties and which provides no mental health services to individuals who may be in crisis.
