Arizona: NRA Stands Opposed to Gun Ban Legislation at Capitol

Wednesday, February 19, 2020

Arizona state flag

This session, anti-gun legislators revealed their true intentions for Arizona by introducing multiple pieces of legislation to destroy Second Amendment rights in the Grand Canyon state. Among these bills, Senate Bill 1625 will ban many commonly owned firearms that Arizonans rely on for self-defense and personal protection.

Your NRA stands opposed to these egregious bills and is actively involved at the Capitol to ensure Second Amendment rights are protected in Arizona. While these bills are unlikely to move this session, it is critical that all NRA members and Second Amendment supporters remain vigilant. Extreme anti-gun bills introduced this session include:

Senate Bill 1624 criminalizes private firearm transfers. It requires private individuals to pay for background checks through Federal Firearm Licensed (FFL) Dealers and obtain government permission before transferring their firearms with family, friends, neighbors, or fellow hunters, with limited exceptions. This proposal would have no impact on crime and is completely unenforceable.

Senate Bill 1625 is a comprehensive ban on many commonly-owned semi-automatic firearms and standard capacity magazines. They, along with magazines with a capacity greater than ten rounds, are used by law-abiding citizens for a wide range of legitimate purposes.

Senate Bill 1626 allows the seizure of an individual’s firearms and ammunition on baseless accusations without a hearing or other opportunity for the person to be heard in court. It permits the government to seize firearms based on weak and nebulous standards of evidence. A person subject to a suspension of a Constitutional right should be entitled to high evidentiary standards, an opportunity to be heard, and the right to face his or her accusers. Civil liberties advocates from across the political spectrum have expressed concerns on these “red flag” bills and how the procedure will lead to abuses of the process because of insufficient due process protections.

Senate Bill 1627 imposes one-size-fits-all storage requirements for firearms. This measure invades people’s homes and forces them to render their firearms useless for self-defense or become criminals.
