Alabama: Sheriffs Attempting to Kill Lifetime Permit Option

Alabama: Sheriffs Attempting to Kill Lifetime Permit Option

Your NRA has learned that a number of Alabama sheriffs are attempting to derail House Bill 39 and Senate Bill 47, NRA-supported bills to provide a lifetime option to Alabama’s concealed carry permit holders.  We’ve heard that the Alabama Sheriffs Association (ASA) and individual sheriffs from across the state have been in Montgomery hammering your legislators to kill these important bills.  The choice of which option is best for your self-defense needs should be YOURS, not theirs.  Please click the “Take Action” button below or call 334-264-7827 to contact the Alabama Sheriffs Association (ASA) and also call your individual sheriff at their office number below provided by the ASA.  (Please do not call their emergency or dispatch phone numbers.)  Respectfully tell them that you, as a law-abiding gun owner, want the lifetime option and they need to stop undermining your right to self-defense!

SB 47 and HB 39 create a new statewide, uniform system to provide lifetime permits for qualified applicants at a cost of $200.  For state residents over 65, the fee drops to $150.

Permit holders don’t need to be reminded that Alabama’s exemption to the NICS background check was stripped last summer after an investigation revealed serious irregularities in the permitting process of several sheriffs over a number of years.  Instead of acknowledging how their actions undermined the self-defense rights of permit holders, however, the sheriffs are trying to kill the lifetime option bills.

The ASA has even gone so far as to sponsor House Bill 308, a bill that creates a new “repository” of all concealed carry permits, along with the personal information of permit holders, to be administered by the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.  It doesn’t provide a lifetime permit and it doesn’t make the permit application process any easier.  This bill was introduced for one purpose and one purpose only – kill the lifetime permit bills that are gaining support day-by-day in the legislature.

The unfortunate truth is that many sheriffs don’t believe they answer to the law-abiding gun owners of their counties.  Over the years, these sheriffs, along with the ASA, have thwarted all attempts to streamline and modernize the permitting system.  They refuse to recognize your right to protect yourself and your loved ones.  Every year, they spend countless hours in Montgomery finding ways to sabotage bills that are introduced to protect and promote our rights.  Once again, they’re in Montgomery to kill NRA-supported bills which advance your firearms freedom.

It’s time we stood together and said enough is enough.  Please use the information here to contact the ASA and your sheriff to let them know that you want a lifetime permit and strongly oppose HB 308 and their continued games to protect the status quo.
