California: They Just Can't Help Themselves, Anti-Gun Bills Scheduled for May 19th!

California: They Just Can't Help Themselves, Anti-Gun Bills Scheduled for May 19th!

This week, the California Assembly returned to work after an extended recess due to the COVID-19 crisis.  The word was that the legislature would return to focus on certain priority issues.  While we all crave to return to some level of normalcy, one thing we were hoping to leave behind was the continued assault on our Second Amendment Rights by the California Legislature.  However, they just can't help themselves.

The Assembly Public Safety Committee has announced their agenda for the May 19 hearing and you guessed it, your gun rights are on the table! Please use the contact information below to call AND email the members of the Assembly Public Safety Committee today and urge them to OPPOSE AB 2847 and AB 2362!

* As previously reported, the legislature has implemented new social distancing policies which include limited access to the Capitol, reduced staff size, and special protocols for policy hearings.  To read more about the social distancing policies, please click here.

Tuesday May 19 - Assembly Public Safety Committee Hearing:

AB 2847, sponsored by Assembly Member David Chiu (D-17), revises the criteria for handguns to be certified for sale in California by requiring the microstamp to be imprinted in one place on the interior of the handgun (currently requires two imprinting locations) in addition to the other current requirements.  It would further require the department to remove three certified handguns from the list for each new handgun added.  It should be noted that no new semi-automatic handguns have been added to the California handgun roster since microstamping was certified in 2013. This legislation is nothing more than an effort to continue to shrink the options you have to protect yourself and your family.  To read more about California's microstamping law click here.

AB 2362, sponsored by Assembly Member Al Muratsuchi (D-66), authorizes the Department of Justice to levy monetary fines on licensed firearms dealers, in addition to the existing enforcement mechanisms which includes, up to the revocation of a dealer's license.  This increased authority to levy fines up to $1,000 for minor violations is ripe for abuse and could ultimately drive dealers out of business for inconsequential violations.
