Louisiana: House Committee Preps for “Gun Day” Tomorrow

Tomorrow, the House Criminal Justice Committee is scheduled to have their “Gun Day,” where they will consider multiple pro- and anti-gun measures. Committee members are expected to vote on these measures, and they need to hear from you now!  Please contact committee members and ask them to SUPPORT House Bill 16, House Bill 124, and House Bill 596 with optional training, and urge them to OPPOSE House Bill 353 and House Bill 326.

Pro-Gun:

House Bill 16 removes the requirement for law-abiding individuals to obtain a concealed handgun permit before being allowed to carry concealed, a handgun for self-defense.  This important legislation ensures that citizens are able to exercise their right to self-defense without government red tape or delays.  HB 16 does not affect previously issued carry permits, and allows citizens who still wish to obtain a permit in order to carry in other states recognizing Louisiana permits, to do so.

House Bill 596, similar to HB 16, creates constitutional carry in Louisiana.  However, HB 596 requires training in order to take advantage of the new law. NRA Members and Second Amendment supporters are encouraged to urge committee members to amend this measure to make training optional.

House Bill 124 clarifies Louisiana’s concealed carry laws that cause individuals with a concealed carry permit to possibly be arrested for carrying a knife while also lawfully carrying a firearm for self-defense. This is not the intent of the law, and HB 124 clears this up.

Anti-Gun:

House Bill 326 redefines juvenile possession of firearms and potentially ensnares minors who are doing nothing malicious.  Further, this measure could cause children who are merely going hunting with their parents during curfew hours to become criminals.

House Bill 353 would ban all private firearm sales between law-abiding individuals. Gun owners would be forced to pay undetermined fees and obtain government approval before selling firearms to family members, friends, neighbors and co-workers, or fellow hunters, competitive shooters and gun club members. This proposal will have no impact on crime and is unenforceable without gun registration.

Again, please contact members of the House Criminal Justice Committee and ask them to SUPPORT House Bill 16, House Bill 124 and House Bill 596 with optional training, and urge them to OPPOSE House Bill 353 and House Bill 326.
