Vermont lawmakers wrapped up the all-virtual 2021 legislative session late Friday afternoon. Ordinarily, the Legislature would call it quits until the following January. However, this year, it appears they will be returning briefly in October to potentially deal with the arrival of funds coming from Federal COVID Relief.
Vermont gun owners survived the session with no new gun bills passing! However, both the House and Senate Judiciary Committees spent weeks trying to pass more anti-gun legislation. In January, leadership said they would confine their work this year to budget and COVID issues. That clearly did not happen. Today, the House Speaker did a self-congratulatory victory lap for passing over 100 bills during the last five months! The Statehouse was closed to the public the entire session as lawmakers logged into Zoom hearings.
Anti-gun politicians in Montpelier will be back. During an online hearing this year, a witness described the gun control under consideration as a “good start.” We will be there every step of the way fighting for the rights of Vermonters.
