Tomorrow, at 1:00PM, the Senate Judiciary Committee will hear Senate Bill 294, to impose a one-size-fits-all firearm storage mandate to make them unavailable for self-defense. Senate Bill 294 imposes a mandatory storage scheme for firearm owners, not taking into account an individual’s particular situation, with an exception for firearms carried on the person or within “such proximity” that it can be readily retrieved as if it were carried. Those not storing firearms in compliance may face fines and imprisonment. In District of Columbia v. Heller, the U.S. Supreme Court held that storage provisions that prevent a law-abiding American from having ready access to a firearm for self-defense are unconstitutional.
In addition, licensed firearm dealers are required to provide a locking device with each firearm sold or transferred, whether the gun owner needs it or not, such as to customers who already have their own. Dealers who fail to do so face fines. This adds additional costs to doing business that dealers must inevitably pass onto consumers.
