On Friday, June 5, both the Assembly and Senate wrapped up their work and recessed for the year. Anti-gun politicians who control Albany always include gun control in their agenda, and this year was no different. Gov. Kathy Hochul made it a top priority to target 3D printing and “convertible pistols.” Her legislative allies delivered in a budget bill, S.9005c, which was quickly signed into law. The legislation bans firearms with a “cruciform trigger bar,” essentially banning an entire class of handguns, regardless of whether a conversion device is installed or even possessed. The bill also contained a ban on 3D printing of firearms and components and went so far as to ban possession of digital files. In the last week of session, anti-gun legislators also approved an expansion of New York’s mandatory storage law. They passed A.1962B, which broadens mandatory storage laws in the Empire state. One piece of good news for gun owners is that S.9338 did not advance in the Assembly after passing the Senate. The bill would have created a 3-day waiting period on all guns for those without a permit.
