On Wednesday, January 31th, the House passed House Bill 415, relating to firearms on school property, after a vote of 53-16-1. This victory was made possible by Rep. Ted Hill (R, H-16), who is the lead sponsor of the bill, and by all of our members and fellow gun rights supporters who advocated for this legislation to pass. The bill now moves to the Senate, where your advocacy will be just as critical. HB 415 allows K-12 school employees with an enhanced concealed weapons permit to carry a concealed firearm at school. The bill also protects the employee’s carry permit and information from public records requests. Enhanced permits are available to Idaho residents over the age of 21 who complete the requisite course and background check.
Every Idaho student deserves nothing less than the strongest shield against evil, and HB 415 delivers that protection. This bill protects our most vulnerable by securing schools that are otherwise not permitting the lawful carry of concealed firearms on their campuses. Idaho schools that currently allow school employees to carry have seen no harm, but instead a deterrent to crime. The right to self-defense guaranteed to Idahoans by the right to keep and bear arms should not end at the entrance to a school, as an employee starts their workday.
