New Mexico House Narrowly Passes Waiting Period Bill, Sending HB 129 to the Senate

Senate Committee Already Set to Hear HB 129 on Monday!

Dear Second Amendment Supporters:

Late Friday afternoon, the New Mexico House narrowly passed House Bill 129 on a 37-33 vote after amending the original 14-day delay for gun buyers. HB 129 now imposes a 7-day waiting period on firearms purchases by law-abiding citizens, including concealed handgun licensees and anyone else who passes a firearm background (NICS) check. This is more than double the length of the gun purchase delay in the neighboring state of Colorado (3 days).

In an effort to fast-track this bill to anti-gun governor, Michelle Lujan Grisham, the radical progressive members of the New Mexico Senate gave this bill a single committee referral. The Senate Judiciary Committee will hold a public hearing on House Bill 129 on Monday, February 5, at 1:30pm (or ½ hour after the Senate adjourns from its floor session) in Room 321 of the State Capitol. This is the last opportunity to stop this legislation before it heads to the Senate floor.

Please make plans to attend Monday's hearing in-person or via Zoom.  It is also critical that you contact your State Senators and urge them to OPPOSE both HB 129 and SB 69, the Senate's 14-day version of waiting period legislation still awaiting a vote by the full Senate!
