Today, Senator Blake Miguez (R-SD22) filed Senate Bill 1, the NRA-backed constitutional carry bill, for the upcoming special session beginning February 19. Louisiana is currently in contention with South Carolina to become the 28th to allow constitutional/permitless carry.

Governor Jeff Landry called for the State Legislature to convene a special session to address crime. The Governor’s proclamation lists 24 items the State Legislature can consider for legislation. Notably, the list allows lawmakers to introduce legislation “to authorize the carrying of concealed weapons by certain persons without the necessity of obtaining a permit.” You can view Governor Jeff Landry’s proclamation here.
Senate Bill 1 constitutional carry strengthens the right to self-defense in Louisiana by recognizing the right of any law-abiding adult who is at least 18 years old to carry a concealed firearm without first having to obtain government permission. This ensures that citizens have their right to self-defense without red tape, delays, or fees. It does not change who is eligible to obtain a carry permit nor impact the existing permitting system. People who still wish to obtain a permit may do so for out of state carry and other lawful purposes.
