Maryland: Firearm Instructors Targeted in “Gun Buy Back” Bill

Tomorrow, the Senate Judiciary Proceedings Committee (JPR) will likely vote on multiple anti-gun bills.

SB1097 originally required gun buy back programs to destroy any firearms or firearm parts submitted to them. Instead, a last minute amendment was offered in committee that had nothing to do with gun buy backs, rather the bill would target firearm instructors by implementing vague training requirements that will be determined by anti-gun bureaucratic agencies. The amendment did not grandfather-in any current instructors, meaning that all firearm instructors would be disqualified from teaching firearms training and safety courses regardless of their experience and expertise.

It’s important to note that the amendment was not available prior to the committee meeting and the adoption was not sufficiently transparent to the democratic process. This is nothing more than an underhanded attempt to pass legislation that will harm the Second Amendment community by reducing the number of firearm instructors in Maryland, thereby making it more difficult for citizens to safely train and obtain their wear and carry permit.

The committee is also scheduled to vote on SB488, which would subject firearm industry members to frivolous lawsuits and make it extremely difficult for them to continue to do business in Maryland. Further, the bill would require industry members submit firearm sales and trace request data to the Maryland Attorney General.

Please use the button below to contact members of the Senate Judiciary Proceedings Committee and urge them to vote against this legislation.
