Minnesota: Anti-Gun Bills Scheduled to be Heard in Committee

House File 2828 and House File 3672, two anti-gun bills that would weaken and eliminate current firearm preemption laws, are scheduled to be heard in the House Public Safety Finance and Policy Committee on Tuesday March 13thPlease contact members of the committee and urge them to OPPOSE HF 2828 and HF 3672 by using the Take Action button below.

Under current Minnesota law, only the legislature has the authority to regulate firearms. HF 2828 would allow local governments to prohibit or restrict a person from possessing a firearm or other weapon within or on government-owned property. Gun owners who violate provisions of this bill could be guilty of a misdemeanor.

HF 3672 is even more radical and would completely repeal preemption laws in Minnesota. HF 3672 repeals several statutes that would transfer firearm regulation away from the state to local governing bodies, allowing municipalities and counties to regulate the use and possession of firearms. This would result in a patchwork of firearm laws across Minnesota and potentially unconstitutional proposals by local governing bodies.

Firearm preemption laws prevent political subdivisions from enacting any ordinance, motion, resolution, policy, or amendment regulating the ownership, possession, and use of a firearm that is inconsistent with state law. Firearm preemption laws exist to protect citizens' Second Amendment rights and to ensure that there is clarity and consistency across the state.

Once again, please contact members of the committee and urge them to OPPOSE HF 2828 and HF 3672.
