Louisiana: Wednesday is “Gun Day” in House Committee - Take Action Now!

Wednesday, April 17th, at 9:30 am, is "gun day" in the House Administration of Criminal Justice Committee. Multiple firearm related bills are scheduled to be heard, including four important pro-gun bills, HB 721, SB 152, SB 194, and SB 214. Additionally, three anti-gun bills, HB 408, HB 498, and HB 627 will also be heard. Get involved today by clicking the Take Action button below to contact the House Administration of Criminal Justice Committee members and urge them to support HB 721, SB 152, SB 194, and SB 214 and oppose HB 408, HB 498, and HB 627.

HB 721 allows K-12 school employees with a concealed handgun permit to carry a concealed handgun at school. Concealed handgun permits are available to persons over the age of 21 who complete the requisite course and background check.

SB 152 makes technical changes to address discrepancies in state law governing the carrying of concealed firearms, in an effort to provide uniformity throughout the state. SB 152 passed the Senate 27-11.

SB 194 enhances and strengthens Louisiana's existing firearm preemption laws to ensure statewide uniformity. SB 194 expands the types of behavior political subdivisions are generally prohibited from regulating, provides standing for both individuals and organizations to seek declaratory and injunctive relief when political subdivisions are in violation, and requires political subdivisions to repeal any offending ordinances or regulations within six months of the bill's enactment. SB 194 passed the Senate 28-11.

SB 214 creates a uniform set of laws pertaining to the carrying of concealed firearms in dining establishments, ensuring law-abiding citizens have the right to defend themselves and their families. SB 214 passed the Senate 27-11.

Anti-Gun:

HB 408 creates the "Louisiana Voluntary Do Not Sell" list, to establish a system where a person can voluntarily waive the right to purchase and possess firearms.

HB 498 and HB 627 create "gun-free zones" to prohibit carrying a concealed handgun in specific locations, creating a patchwork of prohibited areas across the state.
