NRA Files Amicus Brief with U.S. Supreme Court Supporting American Firearms Manufacturers in Lawsuit Brought by Mexico

Fairfax, Virginia – Today, NRA filed an amicus brief with the United States Supreme Court in Smith & Wesson Brands, Inc. v. Estados Unidos Mexicanos.

Mexico filed this case against several of America’s largest firearms manufacturers, seeking to hold them liable for violence committed by Mexican drug cartels in Mexico. Mexico is requesting billions of dollars in damages from the manufacturers as well as the imposition of extensive gun-control laws in the United States.

The American firearms manufacturers petitioned the Supreme Court to hear the case after the First Circuit Court of Appeals held that the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act does not bar Mexico’s suit. NRA filed an amicus brief supporting the petition, emphasizing that this case epitomizes the type of abusive lawsuit that the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act was enacted to prohibit.
