Maryland: Gun and Ammunition Bans in Committee this Week

This week, committees in both the House and Senate will be considering anti-gun legislation. The House Judiciary committee will hold a hearing on House Bill 1287, to ban so-called "convertible" pistols, which based on the broad definition could ban all semi-automatic pistols. Additionally, the Senate Education, Energy & Environment Committee will hear Senate Bill 634, to ban lead ammunition in hunting. Please contact committee members using the take action button below and ask them to oppose this HB 1287 and SB 634!

HB 1287 bans a person from manufacturing, selling, offering for sale, purchasing, receiving, or transferring a certain convertible pistol; and defining "convertible pistol" as any semi-automatic pistol that can be converted into a machine gun by the attachment of a switch/auto-sear. This legislation has the potential to ban all semi-automatic pistols and ignores the fact that "Glock switches" and similar devices are already illegal under both state and federal law. HB 1287 will be heard in the House Judiciary Committee on Wednesday, March 5 at 1 pm.

SB 634 bans the use of lead ammunition for hunting. The legislation requires the Department of Natural Resources to phase in the prohibition by species by July 1, 2029. SB 634 will be heard in the Senate Education, Energy & Environment Committee on Tuesday, March 4 at 1 pm.
