On Monday, May 12th, the Senate Labor and Commerce Committee passed Senate Bill 136, critical legislation that protects the privacy of firearm owners by prohibiting the use of firearm and ammunition specific merchant category codes by payment processors. SB 136 prohibits the use of firearm-specific Merchant Category Codes that could be used to track lawful firearm and ammunition purchases or create de facto registries of gun owners. The bill also bars financial institutions and payment networks from discriminating against firearm retailers or disclosing transaction data collected in violation of this protection.
