On Wednesday, the House Gun Violence Prevention Committee voted to advance Senate Bill 8, a sweeping gun control measure that expands mandatory firearm storage requirements and drastically increases penalties for law-abiding gun owners. SB 8 is now eligible for consideration by the full House of Representatives. Please use the Take Action button below to contact your state representative and respectfully urge them to OPPOSE SB 8 when it comes to the floor for a vote!
SB 8 requires individuals to lock up all firearms in their home, vehicle, building or other structure. Under current law, individuals are required to safely store firearms in areas not accessible to anyone under 14. This legislation increases the age to 18 and includes prohibited persons and “at risk” individuals. This legislation could potentially strip law-abiding owners of their rights based on the actions of criminals and subjects them to civil fines up to $10,000.
In addition, SB 8 broadens the definition of firearms trafficking. If passed, this bill would criminalize bringing more than one "prohibited firearm" into Illinois per legally eligible adult in a vehicle. This could unintentionally target law-abiding citizens, particularly those traveling from neighboring states with more robust Second Amendment protections.
This bill does nothing to stop criminals and instead places undue burdens on responsible gun owners across Illinois.
NRA-ILA will continue to monitor this legislation and keep you updated on all Second Amendment developments in Illinois.
