Tonight, July 8, the Fairfax City Council is holding a public hearing to determine if the council will move forward with the introduction and consideration of an ordinance to increase "gun free" zones and the penalties associated with carrying in the prescribed zones.
Please click the “Take Action” button below to contact the Mayor and City Council to urge them to OPPOSE amendments to expand the current gun control ordinance!
The proposed amendments to the existing ordinance would prohibit firearms at the following places: (1) city permitted events, as well as those events that would otherwise require a city permit (which includes events permitted by an authority or local government entity created or controlled by the city in whole or in part); and (2) parks controlled by a park authority that was created or controlled by the City in conjunction with one or more other localities. The ordinance does not include an exemption for concealed handgun permit holders. Further, it would increase the penalty for violations of the ordinance from a Class 4 misdemeanor to a Class 1 misdemeanor. Should the council approve moving forward with this ordinance tonight, a formal vote and hearing will take place on July 22nd.
