On September 1st, gun turn-in programs will become illegal in the Lone Star State. These programs, often funded by taxpayer dollars, to purchase firearms from individuals have repeatedly failed to improve public safety, and have resulted in dangerous consequences.
This Saturday, El Paso County will host one more misguided gun turn-in event before the new state law takes effect on September 1st. This move demonstrates that El Paso County is willing to waste taxpayer resources and law enforcement’s time on stunts that have no impact on public safety. In fact, gun turn-ins have been linked to later crimes and incidents:
- In gun-controlled Chicago, a glock from a 2023 turn-in vanished from police custody and was later used in three shootings before being recovered from a 16-year-old boy.
- Even an Obama DOJ memo held in 2013 that gun turn-ins are ineffective.
- In Maine, a gun turn-in program held by the "Maine Gun Safety Coalition" nearly had deadly consequences when organizers negligently discharged a loaded muzzleloader in an urban setting.
