New Jersey: Senate Vote on Gun Bills Scheduled for Next Week

The gun-grabbing grinches of Trenton do not take a holiday break from trying to steal more rights from Garden State gun owners. As lawmakers spend December wrapping up a “lame duck” session, many gun bills have been up for action already, with more scheduled next week.  As previously reported, NRA-ILA was in Trenton earlier this week to testify against bills in an Assembly Committee.

On Monday, December 22, the Senate is convening a voting session, and bills from the gun bill package NRA testified against last summer are on the agenda. Please use the Take Action to contact your state senator and urge them to OPPOSE these unnecessary gun control bills.

The bills include:

A.4974/S.3893 establishes criminal penalties for sale and possession of machine gun conversion devices.  Such devices are already banned at both the state and federal level.

A.4975/S.3894 establishes the crime of possessing digital instructions to illegally manufacture firearms and firearm components.  In 2018, Gov. Phil Murphy signed legislation banning the use of these digital files.  This bill is even worse, as mere possession of the files would result in harsh penalties, even if the person unknowingly “possesses” them on a long-forgotten, old computer or email account.

A.4978/S.3897 requires the Attorney General to report data regarding shootings that did not result in bodily injury.  This is nothing more than an attempt to manipulate data so that it can be used to justify more firearm restrictions in the future.

A.4981/S.3900 permits a court to take additional time to consider pretrial release or pretrial detention when a firearm offense is involved.  After our objections in committee, the bill’s provision to allow indefinite pre-trial detention was amended to limit such detention to no longer than 7 days.

This is a hectic time of year when the 2024-2025 session nears adjournment in early January.  The clock is ticking on these bills.  Your immediate action is needed to help defeat them with a simple message!  These gun bills are completely unnecessary. New Jersey has more than enough gun laws already. It’s time to tell politicians to leave law-abiding citizens alone and focus on enforcing the laws already on the books.

Please remember, this is the agenda at the time of this posting, more bills could be added. It is important to continue to check your inbox and follow www.nraila.org for the latest developments.
