On Tuesday, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed House Bill 4285 into law, allowing middle and high schools to offer courses on hunter safety and responsible firearm ownership.
HB 4285, introduced by Rep. Curtis VanderWall and building on similar legislation introduced earlier this year in the Senate, directs the state to develop and distribute a firearm safety curriculum to Michigan schools, available to students in grades 6–12. This voluntary program will be developed collaboratively by the Michigan Department of Education and the Department of Natural Resources and will teach responsible firearm handling, cleaning and maintenance, and safe hunting practices. Students who complete the program would earn their Hunter Safety Certification, empowering them with the knowledge and responsibility that comes with firearm ownership and outdoor stewardship.
NRA-ILA thanks Rep. VanderWall for sponsoring this important legislation and Sen. Jon Bumstead for his leadership in the Senate on similar legislation. We also thank all Michigan legislators who supported HB 4285 and helped ensure its passage into law.
NRA-ILA will continue to monitor Second Amendment-related legislation in Michigan and fight for the rights of law-abiding gun owners.
