At midnight on Sunday, March 17th, the Minnesota State Legislature adjourned sine die, marking the end of the 2026 legislative session.
During the session, anti-gun lawmakers used every trick in the book to try and advance gun control, but were thwarted at every turn, defeating all anti-gun proposals this session.
Notably, this session saw the defeat of HF 5160, the "gun control wish list," a package that previously fell under bill numbers HF 5140, SF 4067, and SF 3655, just to name a few. H.F. 5160, a carbon copy of the previous iterations, included a ban on modern sporting rifles, magazines that hold over 17 rounds, homebuilt firearms, and certain types of triggers. It further attempted to limit your right to sel-defense and expanded red flag laws.
Also defeated this session was SF 5052, the Senate Omnibus Tax Bill. This legislation included Governor Walz's supplemental budget bill that would have imposed a punitive tax on firearms and ammunition.
NRA thanks all legislators who voted against the many gun control bill this session and all NRA members and fellow Second Amendment advocates who engaged. The defeat of all gun control proposals is a significant victory for all law-abiding gun owners in Minnesota.
