Trump Reinforces Support for the Second Amendment During National AM250 Address

It may not need to be said, but we’ll keep saying it: Donald Trump is the most pro-Second Amendment president in the NRA’s history of protecting the right to keep and bear arms.  While the nation watched the amazing celebration of the 250th anniversary of America’s independence from the British monarchy on July 4, he once again made that clear.

After a severe weather front moved through the nation’s capital that resulted in a roughly two-hour delay of festivities while attendees were evacuated to seek shelter, Trump took the stage to speak about American excellence.  And while Trump spent much of his time honoring some of our nation’s heroes—including a veteran of World War II, two Korean War veterans, the crew of the recent Artemis II mission, the last man to walk on the moon, and 11 Gold Star family members—he also took special care to mention the Second Amendment.

Speaking of our nation’s founding, the President said:

“Our founders not only won our liberty; they secured it with the most righteous political document ever conceived. It’s called the Constitution of the United States. Very special. And it’s because of their genius that we remain the finest people on the planet after 250 years. Unlike so many others in the world, in this country we have freedom of speech, freedom of religion, equal justice under the law—although I wasn’t treated that well, but we won’t get into that—and the right to keep and bear arms. And for the almost six years that I was president, I guarded very, very powerfully your Second Amendment. And they didn’t do a thing to it. And it was not easy. But we guard your Second Amendment. We guard it very, very strongly and cautiously.”

He then went on to recount several major victories in American history that could not have been achieved without our cherished right to arms. Also mentioned were a number of significant historical figures who are indelibly linked to firearms, including Davy Crockett, Wyatt Earp, Annie Oakley, and “Buffalo Bill” Cody.

President Trump additionally brought up President Teddy Roosevelt, who was a Life Member of the NRA and an iconic outdoorsman.

This followed up his remarks in late June at an event in Pennsylvania underscoring his longstanding partnership with the NRA and pledging his ongoing support for National Right-to-Carry Reciprocity legislation.

U.S. Presidents always have a full agenda and a mindboggling array of issues to handle. So when President Trump repeatedly mentions the Second Amendment in public appearances over a short span of time, you can believe it is a true priority for him.

Then again, what else would you expect from a man who has made so many contributions to defending and restoring the Second Amendment to the state originally envisaged by our Founding Fathers?

President Trump has been a tireless advocate of this right, including through bureaucratic reforms, Executive Orders, and appointments like that of Harmeet Dhillon, his Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice (CRIT). Dhillon, likewise, has been a woman on a mission, establishing the first Second Amendment Section within CRIT and filing suit after suit to challenge unconstitutional gun control laws or policies at the state, local and even territorial levels.

And remember, this level of support may be hitting unprecedented levels during this term, but Donald Trump was supporting the Second Amendment during his first term, too.

President Trump’s sustained, enthusiastic, and unfeigned support for the Second Amendment truly distinguishes him from those who court gun owners during elections but then somehow never get around to prioritizing the issue while in office. On the biggest stage during one of the signature moments of his second term, he showed up for them once again.
