Executive Profiles: Sandy Froman

Tuesday, April 19, 2005

Sandra S. Froman is President of the National Rifle Association of America. An Arizona resident, Froman has been an NRA Life Member for 20 years and a Benefactor Member since 1994.

Elected to the NRA Board of Directors in 1992, she currently serves as a member of the Executive Committee and chair of the Grassroots Development Committee. Froman has also served on the Legislative Policy, Legal Affairs and Action Shooting Committees, as chair of the Ways & Means Committee and as a trustee of the NRA Civil Rights Defense Fund.

Froman was elected to The NRA Foundation’s Board of Trustees in 1992 and became the Foundation’s first woman president. She helped to build the successful Friends of NRA dinner program and establish the Foundation’s permanent endowment, which now exceeds $20 million.

An NRA-certified instructor, Froman promotes firearms education, safety and marksmanship training for all peaceable Americans, especially women and youth. Froman helped develop NRA’s Refuse To Be A Victim® program and pilot the hunting component of NRA’s Women on TargetÒ program. She served as immediate past president of the National 4-H Shooting Sports Foundation, which supports the largest organized youth sports shooting program in the country, reaching over 400,000 youth annually.

Froman is active in local, state and federal elections. She continues to work in Phoenix and on Capitol Hill on legislative matters. She was instrumental in the successful grassroots fight to pass legislation in Arizona, recognizing the right of law-abiding citizens to carry firearms concealed for self-defense, and worked to pass legislation strengthening Arizona’s preemption law.

She is a member of NRA’s Heritage Society and a long-time benefactor of NRA’s charitable and educational programs. She sponsored the law enforcement exhibit at the National Firearms Museum and the Bruce Nelson Endowment at The NRA Foundation in memory of her late husband, a career law enforcement officer.

Principal among Froman’s firearm-related interests are women’s self-defense, tactical pistol and rifle shooting and military arms collecting.

An attorney in private practice for 30 years, Froman holds an undergraduate degree in economics with honors from Stanford University and a juris doctorate degree from Harvard Law School.
